Abstract
The 2nd German Federal Forest Inventory ("Bundeswaldinventur - BWI II") was carried out in all German Lander in 2001/2002. In the western Lander it was a consecutive survey after the first Inventory 1986 to 1990 ("BWI I"). The methdical basis is described as well as some main results. They show that the forests in Germany have developed in a proper way. The growing stock has reached the highest level ever recorded, namely in the southern part of the country.
