Abstract
In public as well as in privately owned forest enterprises there is a widespread attempt to convert pure Norway spruce stands into close-to-nature mixed stands with European beech to gain stable, multifunctional and sustainable forests. Within a research project that was funded by the BMBF, cost and benefit data from the book-keeping of the state forest districts of the Solling-area were analysed. The Solling is a low mountain range in Lower Saxony, dominated by European beech-, Norway spruce- and mixed stands of both species. Thereby, the correlation between natural productivity, timber prices, stumpage value and extent of calamities on one side and tree species, site and stand structure one the other side were exposed. Some of these results were used in a dynamic management class model to describe the development of economic key figures like profitability, liquidity, flexibility and risk for the alternative management concepts. Also taking economic results from a comparison of private forest enterprises into account, conclusions are drawn for future forest managent and forest policy.
