Abstract
The paper outlines some major developments in natural forest management (NFM) in the tropics. Also, the role of non-timber forest products (NTFP) and certification in fostering sustainable practices are reviewed. There are examples showing that under specific framework conditions NFM is a viable land use option. If planned as phased approach, considering the development stage of forestry in the individual country, certification can give a significant input toward sustainable NFM. It has turned out, by contrast, that NTFP can do little in conserving natural tropical forests.
