- AbstractThis article gives an overview of Dutch organizations concerned with extension, consultancy and promoting the interests of forestry and - in close relation - nature management. The Dutch forest sector is characterized by a large diversity of such organizations, which tend to be more or less interconnected. Ownership of (wood)land is the main denominator for categorizing these organizations, e.g.: - State ownership; mainly the State Forest Service, - Nature conservation organizations, Private owners, - Communities and other semi-governmental bodies. Special attention is given to the Forestry Borad (Bosschap, founded 1954), a statutory trade organization, which is a typical Dutch institution. It represents all of the owners listed above as well as employees in forestry, and is financed by both categories. The Forestry Board has legislative powers to determine rules and regulations, for instance regarding insect control. The authors remark upon the general change from forestry to nature management, which has been taking place in The Netherlands the last 50 years. This is of consequence to the way the different owners organize their tasks, such as extension and lobby. New alliances have to be formed, based on a new approach of the role of forests and forestry in the densely populated Netherlands. The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality finances extension activities, to support forest owners in managing their forests in a multifunctional way (i.e. a mixture of nature management, wood production and recreation). Forest Management systems such as "integrated forest management" are stimulated by the government. The forestry co-operative (Bosgroepen) carry out most extension work through the KIS-program. Several examples of extension activities within this program are listed in this article.
