- AbstractThe influence of different types of thinning on the genetic structure of two beech stands growing in different regions in Germany (Rheinland-Pfalz: stand Winnweiler and Niedersachsen: stand Uslar) were studied. Sample plots, undergoing different silvicultural treatments were chosen in each beech population and all the trees on these plots were sampled to be genetically analyzed. For the genetic analysis bud tissue was investigated by means of horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. The following eight enzyme systems, were analyzed: GOT, LAP, PGI, PGM, MNR, IDH, MDH, 6PGH. The isozyme analysis was performed according to the methods descirbed by Müller-Starck (1996). In this study the first results of two sample plots in each beech (no treatment: "N", and intensive high thinning: "SD" or Auslesedurchforstung "AD") are presented. In general, the first results shows that genetic structures of these two beech stands were changed after the silvicultural treatment but the genetic distance between the two populations was higher than those between the two treatments within each population. So, the genetic distance between the two populations Winnweiler and Uslar was relatively high, showing a comparatively high genetic differentiation between them. The findings about the genetic structures of the investigated sampling plots colloborated with the results of Müller-Starck (1996) and Dounavi (2000), confirming a limited distribution of the seeds and a distinct spatial structuring of the genetic variation in beech stands. The percentage of heterozygosity was higher in the plots under silvicultural treatment than in those without any silvicultural treatment, because of removal of individuals probably being homozygotes and showing a disadvantage in their growth compared with heterozygotes.
