Resulting from long term investigations on hybridization in the genus Larix, larch hybrid seed orchards have been established for the mass production of seed from the best selected and tested hybrid cominations. In Germany, there are four hybrid seed orchards, consisting of clones of the species Larix decidua Mill. and L. kaempferi (Lamb.) Carr., registered and approved to the production of larch hybrid seed as "tested reproductive material". As a prerquisite for use, the proportion of hybrids within the seed crop of the orchards has to be determined. The isozyme gene locus SKDH-A has been applied as a suitable genetic marker for this purpose in all four seed orchards. For one orchard, the investigation of three crops from different years has shown big variation due to flowering and weather conditions.
