Abstract
It took quite a long time for Germany to make suggestions for the portection of certain areas required by the EU Habitats Directive (FFH). So far Lower Saxony has suggested two battches of specific areas to the EU but there is still another batch needed. The required forest habitats are listed in appendices of the directives. In order to meet the requirements of its own long term ecological forest policy and of the EU directives the state forestry service of Lower Saxony laid down a list of state owned forests which are to be treated under specific ecological conditions. In the district of Braunschweig about 50 % of the suggested FFH forest areas are owned by private people with objected to their forests being nominated to FFH protection. The nature conservation authorities in the Braunschweig district government have begun to establish rules for the FFH-protected areas which differentiate between state owned and private owned areas. It is a very important gal for the FFH-areas not to be diminished in their ecological value. To optimize certain aspects in the forestal treatment in private owned forests it is necessary to offer contracts to the owners. The goal of these contracts is e.g. to do without exotic trees in the coming forest regeneration or to maintain a certain amount of dead or old wood standing in the stands. So far the first offers of "nature protection contracts" have been accepted very well.
