Abstract
The program "Wald 2000" demands for Northrhine-Westfalia a close-to-nature silviculture without clear felling. The transition to working with more natural processes like natural regeneration is without doubt more favourable when compared with tradtional management methods. However, in many cases it is not useful to do this step all at once and on the whole forest area, especially in the management of large spruce stands. Forest owners with a large amount of mature spruce stands, who do not want to risk working against the prevailing opinion often tend to harvest their annual yield by repeated thinnings in mature stands than by further clearnuts. This leads to decreasing basal areas and yield losses. Furthermore the lower canopy increases the danger of wind-throw and breakage. Under these conditions a limited amount of not too large clear fellings is, at least for a transitional period to be recommended. In an area with large spruce stands forestry without clear fellings would additional be disadvantagous under aspects of species protection. Many species of insects, birds and small mammals are adapted to open areas in the forest landscape, and they would be threatened by continuous covered forests. In many mountaineous areas tourism is an important economic factor. Tourists do not like to walk only in closed forests, they prefer to be able to look at the landscape from time to time.
