Logs and sawn timber of Japanese larch of German (Rhineland-Palatinate) origin have been analyzed according to European standards. The material for the study was collected from thinnings of three fifty years old representative stands. The log quality was evaluated according to German HKS and European EN 1927-3. The sawn timber (120 · 60 · 5000 mm) has been visually graded according to DIN 4074 Part 1 and in addition to this bending strength and the modulus of elasticity has been measured. According to the results of former studies, strength and elasticity is in a comparable range as Douglas fir and Scots pine, but does not reach the strength values of European larch of the same age. Distortion after drying was the most severe defect. This might be caused by juvenile wood. Adapted sawing patterns machine stress gradig and specific drying regimes can help to overcome these problems.
