This is a study of the influence of fuelwood collection on the structure of a degraded dry deciduous forest situated in the Tamil Nadu plains, South India. It indicates an effect of different fuelwood utilisation intensities on the forest structure. However, the analysis of the fuelwood collection determining the tree formation by means of regression analysis shows an unexpected low explanatory power. The regularly occurring anthropogenic fires and fuelwood utilisation by groups, who do not represent the local users, outhweigh to some extent the effect of the wood collection by the local population. The study also analyses the sociodemographic background of the forest users and households who are not involved in forest utilisation. Here a clear difference, with regards to cast affiliation and other social characteristics, can be observed. The article points out the urgent need to involve fire in forest management strategies and the creation of the necessary political suppositions. Furthermore, the social status and the sociodemographic aspects of the people involved in the utilisation of forest products have to be considered in order to establish sucessful forest management systems aimed at sustainability.
