- AbstractGrowth of edge trees was studied at six gaps of pure Norway spruce stands in the German Ore Mountains using increment analysis over-ground and methods of sequential coring and ingrowth cores below-ground. Increased resources availability after gap formation promotes the stem growth of edge trees. The proportion of the crowns oriented towards the gap have more needles and a better branching degree. With distance to the gap edge the fine root density decreases significantly and the differences and ingrowths of fine root biomasses have maximum values occurring at a circular strip at 2.2 m distance to nearest tree. The smallest root-free areas were found in 35-year-old stands and in small gaps. Our findings indicate that a proper understanding of the ability of spruce stands to close gaps is important to allow for better decisions on when to establish artificial regeneration in gaps.
