- AbstractThis paper deals with the development, the management and the landscape of the greatest state hunting region of the former Germany. This region, the "Elchwald", situated in the northern part of East Prussia between the Baltic Sea and the rivers Deime, Pregel, Memel and Russ included 11 forest districts covering about 100,000 ha. It was well-known for a wonderful landscape of great variety, its magnificent natural deciduous forests and a rich game population with elk in particular and red deer. The intensive sylvicultural management was well recognized. Since mor than 5 decades the region belongs to the Russian district of Kalinigrad. Only a very extensive forestry remains. The old road and ditch system is dilapidated and the forest stands are mostly degenerated. But the natural landscape with its high wandering dunes, its wide untouched high moors, great rivers and the jungle of alder swamps is once and today a real eldorado.
