The major German approach toward certification was initiated by its communal forestry organizations. The Forstinitiative Deutschland (Forest Initiative Germany) elaborated a German standard for sustainable, ecological forestry and is presently experimenting an FSC-compatible certification scheme. The Timber Register Foundation (HOLZREGISTER Stiftung) is presently being run as a research and development project, but will in the future independently certify any forest management unit. 1. Compliance with forestry laws and regulations. 2. Economic self-determination of forest owners and support of rural development through forestry activities. 3. Customer-oriented commercialization of forest products. 4. Integration of biological diversity management with the forest management. 5. Ecologically sound resource management. 6. Sound inventory, planning and control measures. 7. Documentation of silvicultural and economic experiences.
