- AbstractIn many countries, conventional tools for forestry development's guidance have not succeeded to direct these processes towards sustainable and ecologically sound practices. Certification is meant to support the exchange of positive practitioner experiences and examples of good management. The Forest Stewardship Council was founded to accredit and harmonize certifiers aiming to implement the tools of certification. A core principle of the FSC initiated process towards certification is its regionalization and according regional negotiation of forestry standards between forest practitioners, environmental and socially representative groups. Within this process lies the danger of politicising or rather instrumentalising the certification for political purposes. Contrary to this, certification is to be seen as a simple tool to promote the marketing of a good forest management' products and thereby support a sustainable forestry's role against its competitor industries. Certification is also meant to support the self-determination of forest owners.
