The new silviculture methods in Thuringia involve Abies alba in a great part of forest stands with the aim to reconstruct stable stand together with Fagus sylvatica and Picea abies. In consequence of former influences like silvivulture methods and forest decline the acquisition of indigenous reproductive material is not certain in every year. The Thuringian silver fir was assessed as a local race with al lower genetic diversity compared to other German provenances. To facilitate the acquisition of reproductive material and to increase the genetic diversity, a seed orchard will be established according to new results in forest genetics. The effects of the combination of isolated relic-populations and plus-tree selection according to different criteria are explained in three examples. It is shown that a clone selection according to genetic criteria helps to avoid bottle-neck-effects which lead sto a higher genetic diversity.
