- AbstractThe utilisation of common-property woodlands remained extremely manifold as long as the wood cut in them was the most important source of energy for a wide circle of persons, and other wood products provided for varied resources in their daily lives. This circumstance is not only expressed by the sheer variety of forms of utilisation and of products gained from the woods but by varied legal forms of such utilisations (with after-effects up to the present), which were adjusted to the many different needs. With the introduction of the "regulated forestry" - its main aim being the production of timber - other forms of utilisation were increasingly criticised as harmful and disadvantageous, and their abolition was recommended. Some of these legal forms, especially those which due to their complexity were too difficult to partition and therefore could not be abolished, are still in existence today, even though a renewed establishment of such forms outside of the context of forestry law is no longer possible (e.g., "Wald-Superfizies"). The influence of the great variety of utilisations of the past and their legal forms are also strongly reflected in the actual situation of property rights on woodlands in Switzerland, especially in those of the Communes ("Burgergemeinden", "Ortsgemeinden") and private corparations, in regard to both their historical development and their present structure.
