- AbstractAbscisic acid was envisaged as playing a vital protective role, being responsible for alleviating the effects of water stress (5,6,8). Its role as regulator in other physiological processes (10) and changes in its content under different stress factor was shown (9). Xanthoxin, an ABA precursor, was also found to play major physiological role in hormonal control of plant growth. Its effect in stress conditions is however not clear and it is not yet possible to decide to what extent the biological activity of xanthoxin arises from conversion to ABA (7). Xanthoxin is discussed as an indicator for oxidative destruction of carotenoids in yellowing needles as a product of co-oxidation of viola xanthin (3). Because of very few informations about the role and the content of ABA and Xanthoxin in trees under stress induced by acid rain, we found it necessary to investigate this problem.
