- AbstractThe supply of mineral nutrients had a significant effect on the growth and form of seedling Quercus petraea. Plants receiving large amounts of fertilizer were more vigorous producing longer shoots with more buds and branches on interwhorl sections of shoot and in whorls than those given smaller quantities. For each flush there was a significant relationship between bud number and length of shoot produced. Qualitative effects were also apparent, high N plants flushed more frequently and produced more branches per bud. The number of buds on interwhorl sections of shoot was greater than in corresponding whorls but whorl buds had a greater tendency to form branches. Application of NPK to 10-year-old trees in the field increased the number of branche produced during the lammas flush of growth. These results are related to growth habit and apical dominance.
