- AbstractThe mapping and evauation of flora and vegetation in the city of Mainz is considered as a substantial part of the research project "Stadtbiotopkartierung Mainz", whose methodological framework is described by Frey (1997). Based on a long-term tradition of botanical research in the Rhine-Main area (Ray 1673, Wein 1929), the investigations attempted to provide detailed biotope-type related informations about vascular plants, lichens and plant communities. This resulted in a variety of species lists of neophytes, endangered and extincted species (after the German 'Rote Liste'), and indicator species. Based on a wide range of literature, the lists are supplemented by comments and maps on the species' spatial distribution, habitat preference, sociology and status of population. Among the 1019 vascular plant species found in Mainz, 686 (=67.32%) are considered as indigenious plants, 175 (=17.17%) as archaeophytes and 158 (=15.51%) as neophytes. 147 plants (=14,43%) belong to the list of endangered species ('Rote Liste'), which demonstrates the significance of the Mainz area, especially its continental dunes and Rhine floodplains, for nature conservation. Further, the paper describes the establishing of botanical quality criteria for delimitated 'urban landscape units' in Mainz. Each unit's biotope-types are assessed in terms of their accordance with the desired natural or cultural vegetation and depicted in a four-step scale. At last, a few measures of flora and vegetation preservation or development are recommended, focussing the urbanized area, the agricultural land and the remnants of virgin landscape in the city of Mainz.
