- AbstractSince May and November 1986, respectively, the seasonal course of the needle falls of Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karsten) was studied (Johanniskreuz, Idar-Oberstein, Rheinland-Pfalz, Deutschland). For that purpose the needle litter was collected and the dry weight determined in a two-week rhythm. Since 1987 and 1989, respectively, two further pine stands (Waldmohr, Speyer, Rheinland-Pfalz) and from January 1990 two additional spruce stands (Schneifel, Adenau, Rheinland-Pfalz) were included in the investigations. Because of storm damages the pine stand Waldmohr had to be given up in spring 1990. With the increase of the investigated sites the needle litter was studied for the occurrence of fungi and damages by insects, only if the fresh weight of the litter exceeded 100 kg/ha (pine) and 150 kg/ha (spruce) respectively. Important fungi that were detected: 1. Pine: Sclerophoma pythiophila (Corda) v. Hoehnel; Cladosporium herbarum (Pers.) Link; Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissler; Cyclaneusma minus (Butin) DiCosmo, Peredo et Minter(=Naemacyclus minor Butin); Lophodermium seditiosum Minter, Staley et Milar (=Lophodermium pinastri auct.). 2. Spruce: Rhizosphaera kalkhoffii Bub.; Sclerophoma pythiophila (Corda) v. Hoehnel; Lophodermium piceae (Fuckel) v. Hoehnel; Lirula macrospora (Hartig) Darker (=Lophodermium macrosporum (Hartig) Rhem) several Leptostroma "species"; Cladosporium herbarum (Pers.) Link. Neither for the pine nor for the spruce a correlation between the occurrence of fungi and the amount of the needle litter could be established. Likewise varying annual quantities of the needle litter do not show a positive correlation with the defoliation. Concerning the pine the seasonal annual course of the needle fall shows, that since 1990 the typical early autumnal cast covers a much longer period, partly starting at the end of June. Further more the data point to a rhythmical cast considering several years.
