- AbstractA field trial for selective tending was established in densely stocked young sessile oak stands in 1991. 400 and 600 stems per hectare were selected and competing neighboring trees were cut. An untreated plot and a plot treated according to current silvicultural practice were established as reference plots. For comparision also 400 stems per hectare were selected on these plots but they did not receive special treatment. After five years of observation the following preliminary results were obtained: - Average annual diameter increment of the selected trees in the treatment with 400 and 600 stems per hectare was 0.36 cm, whereas the silvicultural practice plot had 0.30 cm and the untreated plot 0.26 cm. This indicates an increased width of annual rings up to 0.5 mm. As height increment remained unchanged, the stability of the selected stems was improved. - Quality of selected trees remained unchanged though the light crown was opened and all other stems were left untouched. Increment of height and of stem length with dead branches was in a proportion of 2:1. - Though additional costs for initially selecting trees are neccessary, positive selective tending turned out to be more cost effective than stem reduction or negative selection.
