- AbstractLevels of antioxidants (ascorbate, glutathione) and activities of defense enzymes (superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, ascorbate free radical reductase, dehydroascorbate reductase, glutathion reductase) were investigated in yellow and green needles of spruce (Picea abies, L.). The chlorotic needles were severely manganese deficient. The antioxidative systems were not diminished, instead increased levels of ascorbate and activities of ascorbate free radical reductase were observed. Increased activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase indicated that an increased demand for reducing equivalents was met by the decomposition of sugars.
