The institute was founded on Luly 1, 1994, as the "Institute for Applied Mycology and Wood Protection" in Hann. Münden (Lower Saxony). Its first scientific director was Prof. Dr. H. Zycha, followed by Prof. Dr. H. Butin. In the course of time the institute was renamed several times before moving to Braunschweig in August 1985, where central, modern facilities had been built for several other institutes as well. In addition to the previously important topics of forest pathology and testing of wood protection substances, in Braunschweig the institute was increasingly involved in the evaluation of plant protection substances for forestry, forest entomology and forest protection. In 1993, Dr. A. Wulf became the current director.
