Already in the decree of foundation of the research centre in 1898 the building-up of a library and the edition of an abstract journal were intended. At the beginning subordinated to the director, and since 1920 to a scientist, the library soon became one of the most important special libraries for plant protection and phytopathology in Europe. Since 1921 the Bibliography of Plant Protection has been edited. After World War II the library dure to reparation got entirely lost and was rebuilt again at three sites: Braunschweig, Berlin and Kleinmachnow. In the early sixties they began to index the international scientific literature of plant protection and phytopathology with modern documentation methods, since 1963 by means of computers. With the database PHYTOMED which from 1965 until 1995 included over 450.000 citations indexed and retrievable by classification attributes and keywords and with the Bibliography of Plant Protection recording the literature in printed form with its table of contents in four languages (German, English, French, Spanish) and numerous indices, a current and modern literature information for plant protection and phytopathology was ensured. An account is given of methodical and technical trends in librarianship and documentation, also of cooperation of the libraries, particularly after the German reunification. In future scope and importance of classical bibliographical documentation will rather decrease in comparison with document supported factual databases and multimedial information systems.
