Peatlands in Mecklenburg-Western Pommerania have been intensively drained and used for high intensity agriculture. The consequent deterioration of site conditions increasingly leads to abandonment of extensive areas and environmental problems such as emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and nutrients into ground and surface waters. The ALNUS project aims to develop an alternative use for these degraded peatlands by rewetting and afforestation with black alder (Alnus glutinosa). The project aims to secure an econimically viable high quality alder wood production while at the same time minimising negative impacts on the environment. The project includes the quantification and monetarisation of positive environmental effects (e.g. carbon sequestration) and the development of economic incentives to promote the sustainable use of peatlands.
