The prerequisite to implementing GIS in timber logistics in Thuringia was to digitize forest plots and inventory forest road networks, i.e., provide wide-area coverage, which crossed property boundaries. As early as during the initial projects considerabel potential for economizing could be documented. To implement such methods in practice, you must first develop market-conform data standards, establish sustainable business models for data marketing, as well as ensuring up-to-date data.
