- AbstractLong time observations of a population of the Middle Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos medius) in a forest in northern Swotzerland showed only slight variations in the location of about 70 breeding territories throughout the last 14 years. Variations were mainly caused by forestry interventions, e.g. regenerations of old growth oak stands by clear cutting method. For the conservation of a stable population of the Middle Spotted Woodpecker (the lowest possible population limit is estimated to 30 breeding pairs) a permanent area of at least 30ha with stands of oaks older than 120 to 150 years is needed. Because of extreme unfavorable age distributions of the oak stands - 80% to 90% are older than 120 years (formerly managed mainly by coppice with standards) - normal forestry treatments of theses forest areas, e.g. regeneration by clear cutting methods, will cause big problems for the future of the population of the Middle Spotted Woodpecker. Possibilities for modified forestry management - beside a resumption of management by coppice with standards - in favor of the conservation of the Mittle Spotted Woodpecker population are discussed.
