The recent legislative measures in favour of afforestation and timber tree farming make it possible to envisage a substantial increase in nursery products. An updating of the organization, the management and the structures of the present Italian nursery system will be therefore needed. The main selection criteria for the propagation material (seeds, cuttings, etc.) and for the raising systems (barerooted or containerized seedlings) and techniques (including pest- and disease-control) to produce nursery stock able to offer in the field the best guarantee of establishment succes, adaptation and growth are described. The need of new management models for a better nursery operations planning and a more efective utilization of the available resources and of the innovations offered by research and biotechnologies is stressed.
