Goat willow Salix caprea has many of the characteristics of a good short rotation tree: it make many shoots, grows rapidly when young, has good winter hardiness when native provenances are used, and has high wood density and low moisture content. A factor limiting the cultivation of goat willow is the difficulty in rooting cuttings. The use of goat willow has been studied in short rotation tree trials in Finland and Sweden since the 1970's. Crosses with other willow species are aimed at combining the desirable characteristics of goat willow with the good rooting capacity of other willows.
