F.W.C. Pfeil (1783 - 1859), who was teaching at the Humboldt-University in Berlin since 1921, was the first director of the School for Higher Education in Forestry at Eberswalde and thus influenced the development of forestry in Germany for many years. Among the considerable number of books the "History of forestry in Prussia since 1806" has to be mentioned. Background information on the subject matter of the history of forest ownership, management and science was given by A. Bernhardt (1831 - 1879) and summarized in 4 volumes. A. Schwappach (1851 - 1932), who was teaching in Eberswalde fom 1886 - 1932 was responsible for the research programm in Prussia but also published a considerable number of books and papers focusing the history of forestry and hunting in Germany and the history of the forest research work in Prussia. In 1950 A. Richter (1909-) took oer the professorial chair for inventory and forest history at the Humboldt University at Eberswalde. When the department was closed in 1970 E. Schwartz (1926-) continued the research programm till 1991.
