Nature conservation and forestry share many points of contact. In the wake of integrating nature conservation and forestry administration into one specialized federal state department, new opportunities for cooperation have arisen. This is helpful in view of the State Forest Administration's underlying principle of increased attention being paid to the society's demands for multifunctional forests in a sparsely wooded region such as Schleswig-Holstein. The future of the state's forests is not to be found in timber utilization, alone. One perspective is to provide ecological achievements and establish alliances with environmental and public welfare associations, who not only appreciate them, but make their demands known to the politicians. This process is aided by the exchange of expertise between nature conservationists and foresters and furthermore facilitates the founding of alliances. Based on concrete examples, this article presents successful cooperation between the specialized administrations in respect to silviculture, the implementation of the NATURA 2000 Guidelines, afforestation and organizational decisions.
