Our lives are currently undergoing change due to three closely related developments: the transition from an industrial to a media society, the speed of information and the scarcely tangible phenomenon of globalization, which has become a catchword. The new thing about globalization is the worldwide connectivity of all our problems and the opportunity of influencing them. This can be an extraordinary blessing, but also a hidden danger. Viewed commercially, globalization has through the ages, always had unflagging pioneers who operated as intensively and effectively as their times permitted, within the scope of historical and international business and trade relations. We must turn a positive face towards the new dimensions rushing to meet us with breathtaking speed. This also means periodically taking a critical look at your own scope of responsibilities. If you compare the forest-related political significance of environmental associations with the forest-related political importance of commercial forestry or the technical and organizational state of developments in the wood industry with forestry's infrastructure, the uneasiness that forestry will one day not be able to suitably keep pace is increased. This holds especially true since we are not bound by common goals and are not raising our united voices to speak up for our forests.
