Research concerning herbicide use to control unwanted vegetation in intensively managed pine plantations is increasing. The need for appropriate experimental design and adequate treatment replication is discussed. Situations are discussed in which multiple comparison tests are correct, and these are contrasted with situations in which response surface analyses are correct. Treatment definition and treatment evaluation and analysis procedures are suggested that will ensure that research time, effort, and money are used in an efficient manner.
