At Elmia Wood 2001, many technical solutions and the latest established developments were shown. They are available for both the owners small forest tracts and for large companies. The emphasis was on timber harvesting and transportation. It was clear that processes were concentrated on the forest machinery industry and the adapting to the world market. Never before were so many large machines shown that are suitable for Canada, the USA, Eastern Europe and plantation management in Latin America. Current innovations of all components connected with the workings of forestry machines will lead to higher productivity, improved ergonomics and environmental compatibility. The greatest development thrusts revolve around IT (Information Technologies). Computer monitoring, data processing, data communication, robot functions and rapid communication via the Internet are only some examples of new challenges. In respect to the new methods of forest operations, these innovations will force us to think about functional distribution and organization forms within forest enterprises.
