The presentation introduces into German key forest policy objectives within the framework of international activities since the Rio summit 1992. It is underlined that global forest conservation and implementation of sustainable forest management on a global scale are closely related goals and it is shown how the EU-LIFE-project is rooted in these international activities. Concrete impacts of these international activities on German forest policy are presented. It is then described how coordination and implementation processes operate under the federal system in Germany. Finally an outlook is provided on future activities at international and national level. The National forest programme launced in Germany in 1999 is presented as an ongoing framework for clarification of further action with and among all relevant societal groups.
