A pilot study was performed in the region Ostwestfalen-Lippe which aimed firstly, at testing the forest certification schemes of FSC and PEFC in practice and secondly, at comparing the certification results. The idea behind this project was to demotionalise the technical discussion about criteria and standards of the two certification schemes and to help organising these schemes in a way most practicable for the forest owners in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Both schemes have proven to be suitable for a certification of the forests in the region. It is suggested to maintain and to further develop both schemes in order to sustain opportunities of action for the forest owners. Certified wood as such still needs to be established at the markets, and the two certification systems have much in common. Because of this it seems problematical if the certification systems try to distinguish at the expense of each other even before certified wood is sufficiently accepted by the consumers.
