The German Global Station Zugspitze/Hohenpeißenberg is being operated on two platforms: Zugspitze, a mountain at the northern rim of the Alps, 2960 m a.s.l., and Hohenpeißenberg, an isolated mountain at 985 m a.s.l., 40 km north of Zugspitze. Hohenpeißenberg has a long history of meteorological and climatological observations (since 1781) and is well known for its long ozone record. The extensive measurements of reactive trace gases within the frame of GAW started in 1995. First results of these measurements are shown. The site characteristics are pointed out. An outlook on future research activities is given. The usefulness of a extensive data set of different meteorological and chemical parameters for the interpretation of the chemical behaviour of an air mass is shown for a special day.
