The value of price information is essentially unknown in forestry. The existence of Timber Market South, a price reporting service for the southern US, gives as a chance to investigate this question. Our preliminary results are reported in Boyd and Hyde (1989) and repeated here. These results provide strong circumstantial evidence that price variation decreased from 1977 to 1981 due to TMS and that the gain to producers from better price information exceeds the costs of providing this information. Our research continues - with more recent data which may remove the circumstantial nature of our preliminary evidence.
