Abstract
The rehabilitation of central european forests changed their composition, increased their timber production but impaired their stability and social services. Today the public expects a forest management which preserves biotopes and their species diversity, conserves water resources and protection functions and opens possibilities for recreation. Forest owners set the production of timber with large dimensions and high quality as their management objective. Only a management using stable stand compositions and long rotations, avoiding clearcutting and minimizing the input of extraneous energy can fulfill such expectations. The challenges of a management under such guidelines for forest policy are discussed.
