Under IUFRO's sponsorship, Project Group P6.01-00 was able to reactivate the use of the Forest Decimal Classification. 29 more forest institutions have chosen this classification system since 1981. A survey of the history of the classification from 1954 to 1990 is given and a closer look taken at the system in order to contribute to an improved application. The compilation of amendments 7 and 8 in English, German, and French, the Trilingual short version, the new German and Slovenian editions of the complete FDC and the resolution for a new name of the Oxford system are presented.
