Abstract
The recreation opportunity spectrum planning framework is used widely in outdoor recreation management in the U.S. It is also increasingly used in other countries, including Australia. There, applications have followed U.S. examples in park and forest settings, but also have been undertaken in urban areas. The fundamental concept appears applicable to Australian conditions, but problems related to inadequate demand and supply data and the lack of clarity regarding management objectives hinders effectiveness. Nevertheless, the Australian experience has expanded applications of the ROS, particularly in more developed settings, and has helped reinforce the need to adopt the basic concept to local needs and conditions.
