Recreation demand in Scandinavian countries differ from many other countries because of resources and land use rights. This paper discusses a theoretical framework which has been applied to recreation demand research in Finland, and which may be adopted in other Scandinavian countries. Recreation demand studies are of two types: those which focus on the demand for recreation resources, and those which focus on individual recreation demand and the recreation demands of a population. An outdoor recreationist typology is introduced as a tool for analyzing the recreation demand of a population.
