Abstract
In introducing the paper, attention is drawn on the importance of sustainable forest management, particularly on steep terrain, to support agricultural development and thus contribute to food security. Innovative approaches are described in planning, surveying, road design and environmentally-oriented road construction, including protection engineering works to open up mountain forest resources. The paper also deals with the importance of the use and transfer of appropriate harvesting technology to meet social and environmental requirements. Several systems are briefly mentioned with emphasis on labour-intensive, basic and intermediate technology. Information is provided on a recent FAO survey on harvesting training needs in 12 African countries which revealed a considerable shortage of training facilities, particularly at the vocational level.
