Abstract
Recovery of forest residues in the western United States have been hindered by the lack of good markets for the residue products. There have been some active residue recovery operations in parts of the region and demonstration research on a variety of recovery and processing methods in other parts. Recovery methods that bunch trees or residue for skidding and that move the residue and commercial product concurrently have been most effective. Processing options have included the use of whole tree chippers in residues and whole trees, chunkers, grinders and the use of a hydraulic firewood shear. The chippers have not been effective in residue material, but work well in whole trees. The grinders have high investment requirements but are effective in reducing short residue pieces to a uniform size. The firewood shear has worked well in both residue pieces and longer trees.
