Abstract
It is reported that mature Cryptomeria japonica D. Don stands in the Kanto Plains have declined recently. C. japonica as well as Chamaecyparis obtusa are dominant tree species for man-made forest in Japan. C. japonica is important in the timber industry because of the quality of its wood products. C. japonica in the Kanto plains have been planted in shrines and temples yard for religious environment and in farms as timber property. The declining of the mature C. japonica in this districts is not elucidated. Reportedly, acid rain is a major factor affecting C. japonica. There is no evidence to explain the acid rain effect on mature C. japonica decline in the field.
