A considerable body of knowledge exists concerning interactions between air pollutants and pathogens of agricultural crops. Very little research has been conducted dealing with such interactions on forest trees, especially mature trees. Most research that has been done contains several short- comings. Observations are often correlative in nature, do not deal with cause and effect, and do not utilize true controls. Pathogens may be misidentified or recent changes in taxonomy make it difficult or impossible to identify the pathogens as described previously. The nature and role of endophyts has not been fully explored. This paper points our areas in which research is needed and suggests how such research should be done.
