- AbstractStress to a seedling is a function of imbalances and/or extremes in temperature, light, moisture, atmosphere, nutrition, and physical/chemical factors. Stress events are cumulative, each event causing the seedling or tree to shift metabolism from development and growth toward adjustment and repair. Seedling stress response and recovery time depend on duration, intensity, timing and frequency of stress events. Of our perception of stress is not in tune with that of the seedling, then stresses we "unwittingly" impose on trees during seedling production, handling and planting, or plantation and stand tending, will limit productivity. These risks can be minimized by developing stress assessment "tools" that elucidate seedling physiological status. To be practical, these tools must be simple to use, quic, and accurate. To minimize decision risk, the measured response should be definitive and linked to a known physiological process or reaction. To be of optimal interpretive value, a "tool kit" approach should be used to develop a more composite picture, and to help ensure that each tools is used within the limits of its capabilities.
