- AbstractSouth Asia, embodying Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka is known for its diverse climate, soil, topography, vegetation and farming systems. The region is thickly populated with poor economy and disturbed ecology. The excessive biotic pressure has resulted in the development of different agroforestry systems ranging from simple forms of subsistence terraced agriculture with multiple trees to "taungya" and shifting cultivation and complex multistoreyed homestead gardens. Status of agroforestry research is discussed.
