Abstract
Adventitious shoot formation was induced in excised embryos of Pinus caribaea and Pinus kesiya in a BAP-supplemented modifed Murashige and Skoog medium (MSM). Highest frequency of bud production was observed when embryos were exposed to BAP for one week at 2 mg/l BAP for P. caribaea and 10 mg/l BAP for P. kesiya. Dilution of the MSM basal medium to 1/4x decreased shoot formation in P. caribaea but favored that of P. kesiya. The concentration of sucrose and vitamins did affect bud formation while increased ammonium nitrate caused browning of explants. Rooting for both species was optimum in medium supplemented with 1uM NAA and 1.5% sucrose.
