- AbstractThe author describes six early first thining trials in Douglas-fir plantations conducted in France between 1981 and 1986. They all include at least one control and one treatment in which each third line plus each fourth tree in the remaining lines is removed. The results observed in 1989 show that the loss of production, which is sometimes high, is very limited in time. The effect on diameter growth is important, also on dominant trees; stability is improved. Problem of wood quality is then discussed, it is more or less related to ring width; the most dynamical silviculture is unable to produce rings as wide as they were before crown closure. The wood quality also depends on intra-ring homogeneity and on the absence of knots.
